Scientist for the Helmholtz International Beamline for Extreme Fields (Physiker/in)
DESY, with more than 2900 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists. The European XFEL a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser facility, produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. DESY is a part of the Helmholtz International Beamline for Extreme Fields (HIBEF) consortium at the HED instrument to perform research in extreme conditions of temperature, pressure, and electromagnetic fields which leverage the peak brilliance, energy range, coherence, and time structure of European XFEL.
About your role:
- Ensure the user operation at the HED-HIBEF instrument at European XFEL
- Further develop the diffraction platforms for static high pressure research, dynamic laser compression with the DIPOLE 100X laser, and pulsed high magnetic fields at the HED-HIBEF instrument at European XFEL
- Have the opportunity to develop your own research activity in one of the above fields
- Actively shape the further scientific development of our user communities
About you:
- You hold a PhD in physics, chemistry, or a related field
- You have an interest in high energy density physics, geo- and planetary science, or quantum materials
- You have strong background in X-ray powder diffraction
- Good skills in data analysis are required
- Knowledge of single crystal diffraction, X-ray imaging and spectroscopy techniques is an additional asset You have experience in one or several of the following:
- Diamond anvil cell techniques
- Dynamic laser compression experiments with high energy lasers
- Experiments In pulsed high magnetic fields
